Maths
At Markyate Village School, we understand how important maths is to many areas of daily life.
Maths Curriculum Intent
Our learners will:
• Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics so that they develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge quickly and accurately
• Be able to solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of problems, including in unfamiliar contexts and real-life scenarios
• Reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry and develop and present a justification, argument or proof using mathematical language
• Have an appreciation of number and number operations, which enables mental calculations and written procedures to be performed efficiently, fluently and accurately to be successful in mathematics
Maths Curriculum Implementation
Our maths curriculum is sequenced by ensuring coverage across all maths content as suggested by the Statutory Framework. Our coverage also shows a progression of knowledge across year groups. Key areas of maths and topics are revisited through fluency activities across the week which aim to aid the recall, retention and embedding of skills and subject knowledge.
Our curriculum is designed using the Herts Essential Maths scheme which follows learning sequences with step by step guidance covering the entire mathematics curriculum from Reception to Year 6. This allows us to provide a high-quality maths education which ensures that our teaching and learning is effective and exciting for all our children.
Our children are exposed to reasoning and problem-solving activities and questions using different representations. We aim to develop the skills and the resilience to solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of situations. The children learn to reason mathematically through following a line of enquiry and they are encouraged to develop and present a justification, argument or proof using mathematical language.
Our maths curriculum enables all learners to access age-related activities. All learners are given support through the use of manipulatives, scaffolded or adapted activities and adult or peer support. We encourage all children to be deep thinkers and also to respect the ideas of their peers as they work independently and in groups or when they use different methods of calculations to solve maths problems.
Each class has a daily maths lesson which lasts for a minimum of one hour. This is taught by the class teacher, with support from the additional adults in the class as appropriate. In addition to this, children partake in fluency session across the week to rehearse and embed key learning and maths skills. Number and multiplication facts are taught through these sessions in addition to daily maths lessons.
Maths Curriculum Impact
We aim to increase the enjoyment, resilience, understanding and attainment in our school. Through carefully designed learning, our children will become fluent in the fundamentals of maths and show a deepening understanding of mathematical concepts. The secure understanding of concrete and conceptual learning runs alongside the use of manipulatives to help visualise what the number means.
There is a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.

Maths at home
There are lots of ways to practise the maths core skills, such as adding and subtracting prices when you are out shopping, reciting your times-tables or playing games with dice or cards. There are also other resources to help improve your maths skills such as TTRockstars.
