School Travel Plan

At Markyate Village School, we want all our children to travel to and from school safely every day. To help achieve this, the school promotes Road Safety in class lessons and in weekly assemblies. We communicate road safety guidelines with parents and wider stakeholders through our weekly newsletters. We also run a number of whole school initiatives by teaming our with Hertfordshire County Council and their Modeshift program.

Markyate Village School actively maintains a Travel Plan which we work towards renewing each year. 

Active Travel Ambassadors

This year, we have four members of Year 5 who were awarded the role of Active Travel Ambassadors (ATAs). They play an important role in helping to achieve the school's aims and work towards the Travel Plan. 

Our Ambassadors are Thia, Millie, Bella and Ellie. Well done for being voted into the role!

November 2024

This November, our Active Travel Ambassadors will be championing Road Safety Week 2024. Watch this space!

October 2024

Our newly appointed Active Travel Ambassadors led a whole school assembly on the theme of 'Be Bright Be Seen'. They shared important information about how to stay safe during the winter months. One top tip was wearing bright or fluorescent colours or reflective strips on clothing. Key messages were delivered: wear bright colours, use lights on your bike and wear things that can help you to be seen. The whole school rehearsed the slogan "Be Bright, Be Shiny, Be Reflective and Be Seen".

Well done! 

Across the school, the children have done learning activities linked to Be Bright Be Seen. These include presentations, posters, word searches and cross words.

March 2021

This week our School Councillors in years 2 - 6 have been talking to their classes about the importance of road safety. Many of the children took part in the Pedestrian Safety lessons delivered by HCC via zoom before half term, but this time the focus is on how we as a community can keep each other safe by having an awareness of others when we drive and park near the school.

The School Councillors have therefore issued a Parking Pledge for all parents to sign up to, which is attached to this Newsletter. They ask that the Pledges are signed by all parents and brought back to class. Hardcopies of the parent sign up slip are available via class teachers too.

September 2020

Week commencing 25th September was Year 6 Bikeability week. Thank you to the volunteer team who came and ran the weekly training for the children and well done to the children who achieved their level 1 and 2 certificates and badges.

Year 5 and 6 Assembly on Road Safety called: Expect the unexpected. The CITV presenter Sam Homewood narrated the video talking to the children about  a range of safety issues for young people including not using mobile phones when crossing a road and not trying to cross a road in front of bus.
